MISSION TRIP- In September of 2007, Pastor Terry Wilder of Swansea First Baptist Church with Dr. Ron Rowe, pastor of Bayleaf Baptist Church , Raleigh , N.C. , led an evangelistic, medical team to Kenya , Africa , for provision of medical clinics in four sites, not previously served. Based on a request from the Turkana Tribe and accompanied by Pastor Julius, the regional director of missions, an interpreter, a security guard,  two van drivers and an ample amount of medicine and Bibles, a small group, separated from the 18 member team in Kitale,  traveled six hours to locate the Turkanas.  Dr. Rowe and James Watson, the youth leader, at Bailey Baptist Church provided pastoral outreach and lay-clinical assistance to the three registered nurses during a seven-hour clinic.” The clinic was conducted in the shade of an umbrella-like tree in an otherwise barren, arid land occupied by approximately 1,000 Turkanas. The territory lies just south of Sudan and Ethiopia and to the east of Uganda .  Nearby was a Sudanese  refuge camp..The average annual rainfall of ten inches is especially difficult during the dry season: June till September. Kneeling in the sand, men and children were seen  desperately digging for water. We, Americans, take water for granted. This experience led to our committing $2300 as seed funds to secure water for Turkanas  and other groups desperate for water. Since returning home,  Stella Eargle has used the internet to pursue water needs and resources for the Turkanas. She has made critical contact with an Ohio-based ministry who has sent a well-digging gig, truck and equipment to Narobia. Registration, permitting and testing of the equipment is required before it is sent for the Turkanas . A $10,000 donation from a church member in Bailey , N.C. will cover the Turkana water needs. The miracle of clean water for the Turkanas and hopefully to others in greatest need of water is being accomplished.

Recognitions: Letters of congratulations were prepared for the following teachers for earning National Board Certification: Annetta Graybgill- Sandhills Intermediate School; Stephanie Herring, and Andi Harrelson- Frances Mack Primary School; Rachel Vail and Becky Zeigler- Sandhills Elementary School .  Twenty-three of Lexington Fours teachers have earned certification through National Board for Professional Teaching Standards.

They highlighted three of the school’s initiatives: Positive Behavior Intervention Support (PBIS)Through the PBIS initiative, the school has developed uniform procedures and expectations that are consistently taught and implemented with students.

Curriculum Connection Meeting: This is one of the techniques Sandhills Elementary School is using to promote professional learning communities within the school.  Curriculum connection meetings enable teachers to meet with their team members and instructional coaches to discuss instructional strategies for curriculum standards and consistent ways to assess student learning of standards.

Assessment Data: Through common assessments and benchmark tests, student mastery of curriculum standards can be assessed throughout the year. The school is working with Pearson Management Software to compile and analyze data from common assessments to make necessary adjustments to improve student learning of curriculum standards.

Why Adolescents Are Impulsive, based on work by Davis Walsh, was the topic of the instructional report.  The presentation pointed out that the Prefrontal Cortex (PFC) of the brain is still developing during adolescent furiously producing dendrites to form connections for decision making. The PFC is the part of the brain that weighs options and makes decisions.  Because the PFC is still developing, adolescents are frequently viewed as gruff, irresponsible, and unpleasant during this developmental stage. When dealing with adolescents, we should be direct, specific, and consistent when setting expectations.  It is important to be consistent with limits and consequences.

The administration reported that the Quality Review Team, whom represents the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), was complimentary of the school district, during the exit conference. A complete report will be sent to the district in approximately one month.

Lexington Four is the sixth school system in South Carolina to receive system-wide SACS accreditation.

Noises in the Hen House
By Mary

We had our annual Bake and Craft sale the Saturday before Thanksgiving and it was very successful.  We give God thanks for that.  The ladies brought in pies, bakes, cookies, candies and breads.  Sarah and Charlotte made up some delicious sausage biscuits.    There was hot cider, hot chocolate and coffee for everyone.  We really appreciate the out pouring of support we get from all of our friends.  You make it possible for us to help others.  I bought one of Estelle's coconut pies.  I shared it but made sure I got the last slice.  It was so good!

All of the ladies worked so hard to get the house and yard ready for this event.  All the hard work was appreciated.  Diane's friend donated a large truck load of things for the yard sale and Leah donated another truck load from Ms. Gussie's house.  We would like to extend our appreciation to both of these families for their thoughtfulness.  We also want to thank Leah for the bedroom set she donated.  We had a great need for it and she so loving gave it to us.  It will be a blessing and appreciated.

We had a few extras helping out Saturday.  Tammy, Diane's daughter, helped sell all day.  Three of my daughters arrived and help us set up and returned to help break it all down. Thanks ladies.

I hope everyone had a nice Thanksgiving day.  Mom's give thanks when everything comes out of the oven tasting good.   We actually give thanks year round for all the blessings God sends our way.   We had a house full Thursday.  Everyone was there except two grandsons and their families.  We missed them, but then...there was more food for the rest of us! (just kidding)

We have another wedding coming up on January 6.  Charlotte will be getting married.  Congratulations Charlotte!

We take special orders for cakes and pies. Our phone number is 803-568-5499. Our address is on Highway #3, 1558 Whetstone Rd., Swansea, SC.

Until next time, "keep thinking the good thoughts and remember to love your neighbor."
